ART ACROSS CURRICULA In this course college students work within a YMCA youth program to instruct several subject areas through the visual arts. The course contains two modes of learning: college classroom instruction and on-site service learning. |

SCULPTURE I In this studio course, students develop awareness of and technical skill in the field of sculpture. Students build on their knowledge of three-dimensional design as it applies to traditional and contemporary practices in a wide range of media. |

STRATEGIES FOR ART EDUCATION This course addresses the objectives of art education, the role of the classroom teacher, and the developmental stages of children’s art. Students will gain practical awareness of materials, processes, tools and teaching procedures that foster the development of K-12 art education. Themes of focus include cross-curricular studies, the history of art education, visual thinking strategies and assessment of both students’ work and teacher progress. Art Education majors successfully completing this course are well equipped for a career in art education. |

ART AS NATIONAL IDENTITY In this course, students explore the use of art to create a national identity. Students discover works of American art that have been imprinted on the American mind, namely The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and Maya Lin’s Vietnam Memorial. Students expand their knowledge of and interest in patriotic work from around the globe in the past and present, including art from Samoa, Mongolia and the former Soviet Union. Students also research how contemporary artists are questioning the relationship between art and country. |

THREE-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN In this studio course, students develop awareness of three-dimensional tools, machinery and processes. The students gain awareness of fields within three-dimensional design and create studio projects that provide insight for working with form. Students develop their creative abilities through projects while building their awareness of three-dimensional artists. |

DRAWING I In this studio course, students investigate concepts of perspective and develop artistic ability in modeling value, gesture, and contour. Students use various media and techniques including pencil, pen and ink, ink wash and charcoal. Subjects may include the nude figure. |

TANZANIA STUDY TOUR In this three-week study tour, students develop lessons and demonstrate their teaching skills while working with Tanzanian students ranging in age from youth to adult. This is a unique opportunity for BSC students interested in learning about Tanzania through active participation. In addition to hands-on teaching experience, students get the opportunity to explore the cultural and natural beauty of Tanzania. |
